FRANKLIN — Erin Edwards of Franklin recently earned her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award given to a Girl Scout. The Girl Scout Gold Award culminates in the completion of a 65-hour service project by each girl. Edwards, a Wallkill Valley High School senior, cleaned and repainted the entrance of the Littell Community Center in Franklin as her service project.
Edwards has been a Girl Scout since kindergarten and says it has always been her goal to earn the Girl Scout Gold Award.
She chose her Gold Award project because her Girl Scout troop and other troops in the community have used the Littell Community Center for a number of events and she wanted to give others the chance to enjoy the space. With the help of her parents, friends, community center staff, and her other troop members, Edwards cleaned and repainted the entrance to the community center. She also installed flower boxes and benches on each side. She planted perennial bulbs that will bloom each spring to keep the community center bright year after year.
Through her Girl Scout experience, Edwards learned to be independent and found a passion for helping others.  Her troop, No. 195, has always been very active, traveling to places such as Salem, Mass., Baltimore, Florida and Bermuda, and serving the community through volunteer work at town cleanups, food banks and animal shelters.
Edwards is a member of the National Honor Society, varsity field hockey and swim teams, and the Future Business Leaders of America. She is also the editor of her school’s newspaper. She is attending Mansfield University next year to earn her degree in nursing.
Within Girl Scouts of Northern New Jersey, 12 percent of eligible girls earn their Girl Scout Gold Award, compared to the national average of 6 percent.
