NEWTON — This Sunday, Christ Community Church has canceled its Sunday service in order to serve the town of Newton. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., members of the church and local community will be painting the bleachers, dugouts and snack stand and doing a cleanup at Memory Park.

Sparta church to host Kidz Klubz registration SPARTA — Sparta Evangelical Free Church Kidz Klubz will host registration Wednesday. The clubs are Awana, for girls in kindergarten through sixth grade; Tree Climbers, for boys in first and second grade and their fathers; and Boys Stockade, for boys in grades three through six.

Ogdensburg church honors former pastor OGDENSBURG — As part of its month-long celebration of the 500th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin, the First Presbyterian Church of Ogdensburg will welcome back former Pastor and Mrs. Robert Shaffer, of Kentucky, Sunday, Oct. 11. Rev. Shaffer will lead a 10 a.m. worship service, and a church luncheon in his honor will follow in the church basement.
Pastor Shaffer was the key organizing pastor for the church in the 1950s. A mission church affiliated with the First Presbyterian Church of Sparta for many decades, First Presbyterian Church of Ogdensburg became a self-supporting congregation under his leadership. Rev. Shaffer served the church from 1952 to 1962.
Former church members, youth group students and friends of the congregation who knew Pastor Shaffer during his ministry in Ogdensburg are especially encouraged to attend. For more information, call Pastor Alden Johnson at (908) 507-3867.
Port Jervis church hosts fall fellowship lunches PORT JERVIS, N.Y. — Drew United Methodist Church is hosting fall fellowship lunches Oct. 7, 14, 21 and 28 in Fellowship Hall. Guests can enjoy soup, bread and dessert for $3, and hear an inspiration message by a local pastor.

Sparta church celebrates peace march Sunday SPARTA — The Sparta United Methodist Church will celebrate the World March for Peace and Nonviolence Sunday. Following the 10:30 a.m. worship service, Pastor Diane Koob will lead the congregation in dedicating and hanging a banner and peace flags on the church’s front lawn.
The event is one of thousands of events held around the globe between Oct. 2 and Jan. 2, during which an international team of marchers will cross the planet, meeting with heads-of-state, talking to the media and participating in large marches and rallies in cities on each continent. The goal is to raise consciousness of peace and nonviolence. For more information on the march, visit www.theworldmarch.org.
Emotional freedom classes set for October SPARTA — The Institute for Spiritual Development, is offering classes in Emotional Freedom Technique from 7:30-9 p.m. Oct. 5, 12, 19 and 26. Led by Rev. Kathy Kerston, the class will give participants the tools to use the technique for personal growth.
