IRS has checks for you; list of county residents owed money

Nearly 40 Sussex County residents are being sought by the federal government wanting to give them a tax refund.
The Internal Revenue Service said Thursday that checks to 39 individual or joint households were returned because the checks could not be delivered by the U.S. Postal Service.
Statewide, the returned checks average $1,365.  The agency announced Thursday that it has unclaimed refund checks totaling more than $4 million for more than 3,000 Garden State taxpayers.
If your name is on the list, or  you believe you are missing an IRS refund check, go to the agency’s Web site, www.irs.gov, and click on the “Where’s My Refund?” tool.
Taxpayers can also call a toll-free telephone number, 1-800-829-1954.
The Web site can also be used by taxpayers to update their address or check the status of a pending refund.
“Don’t delay if you think you are missing a refund,” said IRS spokesman Gregg Semanick. “The sooner you update your address information, the quicker you can get your refund.”
He said the IRS encourages taxpayers to use the direct deposit option which speeds up the refund process and puts the money directly into your bank account.
And, he noted, if taxpayers use e-file to file tax returns electronically, the refund process is even quicker and more secure because there is no paperwork to get lost or stolen.
Nationally, the average undelivered refund check was $1,148, compared to $990 the previous year. That 16 percent increase was in line with the rise in average refund amounts for all tax returns because of changes in the federal tax laws.

Here is a list of Sussex County residents who are owed a refund from the IRS.
