Annual Hilltop Art Exhibit opens Oct. 9

SPARTA —  Nicolena “Nina” Palumbo, of Sparta, will be the featured artist for the 32nd Annual Hilltop Country Day School Art Exhibition and Sale, to be held Oct. 9-11 at the school.
A self-taught artist who  has been painting  and drawing since grammar school, Palumbo was entered in a statewide competition by her sixth-grade art teacher, Nina Christie, and won her first of many awards.
She is returning to exhibiting in the tri-state area after an absence caused by the effects of multiple sclerosis. Once living a roaming gypsy life through New Jersey, MS has slowly forced her to settle and continue to express herself through her painting.
Palumbo uses the art venue to raise MS awareness and is also an advocate for adult stem cell research. She is trying to have a bill introduced in New Jersey allowing for the use of adult stem cells to treat MS and other illnesses.
The Hilltop Country Day School Art Exhibition and Sale will also include artwork more than 85 artists and sculptors.
The event begins on Oct. 9 with an opening champagne reception with the artists, 7-10 p.m. A donation of $15 per person is suggested to attend the opening.
The gallery will then be open on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.  and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.  Families are encouraged to attend and bring their children to visit the gallery. A scavenger hunt game will be available for children to do during their visit. Once they have completed the hunt, they will receive a small prize.
In conjunction with the exhibition, a special tour of the art gallery is being offered for children from kindergarten to 8th grade. The tour, scheduled for Oct. 10 at 2 p.m., will be conducted by Hilltop art instructor SuzAnne Pacala. Following the tour, a snack will be provided.
Registration for the tour is required and space is limited. To register or for more information, call the school at (973) 729-5485.
