Sussex County Community College  welcomes Dr. Marian Eberly as the new Dean of Liberal Arts, Social Science and Education.  
Eberly will be leaving her position as associate dean of the Franklin Center at Raritan Valley Community College to begin at SCCC this month.
 Eberly received her bachelor of science in Modern Language Education from Eastern Mennonite College, her master’s degree in Applied English from Michigan State University, and her Ed.D. from Rutgers University. Prior to her position as associate dean at Raritan Valley Community College, Eberly was the assistant dean for academic foundations there.
The SCCC search committee cited  Eberly’s strengths as her liberal arts background, her experience as both a classroom instructor and program coordinator, her strong administrative experience, and her doctorate in education.


Achievement
Nicole L. Van Tassel of Franklin, a rising senior at Centenary College, was the recipient of numerous awards upon completion of her junior year. She was the recipient of the Centenary College Cyclone Award for Outstanding Achievement in Athletics and Academics; the Colonial States Athletic Conference All-Sportsmanship Team Award for Women’s Basketball; the Mid-Atlantic Association of College and University Housing Officers Academic Excellence Award; and the Centenary College Resident Assistant Rookie of the Year Award.
A dean’s list student for three consecutive years, she was also chosen to be co-captain of the Centenary Cyclones Women’s Basketball Team.

Sasha Dessy, daughter of Mira and Stephan Dessy of The Woodlands, Texas, and granddaughter of Huguette and Pol Dessy of Sparta, has been accepted in the Ph.D. program in psychology at the Texas Women’s University in Denton.
She graduated summa cum laude in psychology from Austin College in Sherman, Texas, where she was a member of the National French Honor Society Pi Delta Phi, the National Honor Society in psychology Psi Chi, the National Honor Scholastic Society Alpha Chi, and the National Academic Honor society Phi Beta Kappa.
Dessy’s program focuses on feminism and multiculturalism. She will study the psychological differences and similarities between people from different cultures and learn how to provide appropriate counseling.

Dean’s list
Lauren Minotti of Vernon has been named to the dean’s list for the spring 2009 semester at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, College of Nursing.

Centenary president to speak at Convocation
HACKETTSTOWN — Centenary College will hold its Convocation and Founder’s Day on Sept. 15, at 10 a.m. in the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center.  The keynote speaker will be Dr. Barbara-Jayne Lewthwaite, Centenary’s 12th President.
 Convocation is an assemblage of the college community that ushers in the academic year.  Founder’s Day recognizes and honors the 10 founding fathers of the institution.  The event will begin with a procession from the College Quad to the John M. Reeves Student Recreation Center and will conclude with the benediction and bagpipe music. 
Lewthwaite’s remarks, entitled “Centenary: Past, Present and Future,” will focus on the history of the 142-year-old institution and will cover the evolution of Centenary College.  It addresses her experiences during her 22-year tenure and how life’s decisions shape a future.

Audio studio to offer college course
LAFAYETTE —  Mix-O-Lydian Studios will be the setting for a new course this fall offered through Sussex County Community College.  The course, “Special Topics in Communication:  Audio Production/Technology” will be taught by Don Sternecker, owner of Mix-O-Lydian Studios, and will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6  to 9:40 p.m.  
 Sternecker said that many people are trying to record music at home and he would like students to learn the basics.  As part of the course, students will learn how to use microphones, how to mix with live sound and how to use portable equipment.   The students will also record live performances.

Workshops for  job seekers
Sussex County Community College will offer two workshops this fall to assist those in finding a new job, “Resume Writing” and “Interviewing Techniques.” 
The resume writing workshop will help students develop their past successes into a great resume. The interviewing techniques workshop,  teaches students how to increase their chance of getting a job offer.
The cost for both workshops is $70.

Centenary to offer
‘Military Mondays’
HACKETTSTOWN — Centenary College will start offering “Military Mondays” on Sept. 14. “Military Mondays” provides veterans with the opportunity to meet with admission counselors to determine if they have been accepted to Centenary and to learn about their military benefits. 
“Military Mondays” will be observed every first Monday of the month.  If the first Monday falls on a holiday, then it would be held every second Monday.
Qualified military personnel are eligible for the Yellow Ribbon Program, a Veteran’s Scholarship, or a 30-percent tuition reduction offered through Centenary College.
