SEATTLE — San Francisco Giants star pitcher Tim Lincecum is facing misdemeanor marijuana charges following a traffic stop in his home state.
Washington State Patrol spokesman Steve Schatzel said Thursday that the 2008 Cy Young Award winner was pulled over for speeding on Interstate 5 about four miles north of the Oregon border on Oct. 30.
An officer approached Lincecum’s 2006 Mercedes and smelled marijuana. Schatzel says Lincecum immediately complied with a request to hand over the drug and a marijuana pipe. The amount measured was 3.3 grams.
Lincecum was fined a total of $622 for driving at 74 mph in a 60-mph zone, and for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
Abreu agrees to remain with Angels LOS ANGELES — Bobby Abreu agreed Thursday to a $19 million, two-year contract to stay with the Los Angeles Angels rather than test the free-agent market again.
“I really feel happy here with Los Angeles,” Abreu said in a telephone interview. “I really enjoy playing for them, and I think when they started with the conversation for the contract and we didn’t have any problems back and forth, it was a nice negotiation. It was no problem to stay and come back with the Angels.”

Watney jumps out to two-shot lead SHANGHAI — Making the first of two trips to China this month, Nick Watney made an immediate impression Thursday in the HSBC Champions by tying the course record with an 8-under 64 to build a two-shot lead.
As hundreds of cameras inside and outside the ropes tagged along to see Tiger Woods open with a 67, Watney quietly went about his business on a sunny afternoon at Sheshan International Golf Club with an accidental eagle and four straight birdies.

Kings’ Martin has hairline wrist fracture SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento Kings say leading scorer Kevin Martin has a hairline fracture in his left wrist.
An MRI taken Thursday revealed a non displaced hairline fracture of the navicular bone in Martin’s left wrist. The team says treatment options are currently being evaluated.
Martin is averaging 30.6 points a game for the Kings, who have lost four of five games to open the season. Sacramento was an NBA-worst 17-65 last season.
Groh’s future up in the air at Virginia CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. — Virginia athletic director Craig Littlepage says a decision on Al Groh’s future as the school’s football coach will come at the end of the season.
Littlepage says in an e-mail to The Associated Press Groh will be evaluated on his “full body of work” and that the school’s goal is to have fan support at games.
That criteria suggests that Groh’s ninth season at his alma mater could be his last. Virginia is in the midst of another losing season with dwindling fan support. The Cavaliers are 3-5 heading into Saturday’s game at Miami.
