Outdoor briefs for 8/16: Bowmen to host 3-D archery event today

The Appalachian Bowmen will host the 29th annual Appalachian Bowmen 3-D Archery Shoot today at the Whittingham Wildlife Management Area on county Route 608.

Registration opens at 7 a.m. with a $15 per day fee or $25 for both days. Children under 12 are free.

The event is open to all archers using traditional or modern archery gear  but crossbows are not permitted.

The event is family-oriented, not a competitive scoring event and is the largest and oldest archery shooting even in New Jersey.

About 1,000 people are expected over the two-day event.

The range is a series of 3-D targets set in the woods and fields of the Whittingham Wildlife management Area with each range consisting of 20 targets ranging from alligators to velociraptors. Along the way, archers may also run into a 6-foot moose and possibly flying fish.

Among the novelty ranges are new and improved running deer targets, pop-up groundhogs and running rabbits. There is also a mechanical disc-throwing machine for aerial shooting and a long-distance range.

The weekend also includes vendors with a wide range of archery and archery-related products and food will be available. Further information is available at www.appalachianbowmen.com.
