Sports briefs for 10/26: Sharks stay hot, defeat Flyers, 4-1

PHILADELPHIA (AP) -- Manny Malhotra got his first two goals of the season, Dany Heatley and Jed Ortmeyer also scored and the San Jose Sharks beat the Philadelphia Flyers, 4-1, Sunday night.

Patrick Marleau and Dan Boyle had two assists each and backup goalie Thomas Greiss stopped 37 shots for the Sharks, who won for the fourth time in five games to complete a 4-2 road trip.

Darroll Powe scored the lone goal for the Flyers, who had their two-game winning streak snapped.

Philadelphia goalie Brian Boucher stopped 24 shots in his first start of the season.

La Russa mulls future with Cards

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Cardinals manager Tony La Russa took a flight from his West Coast home to St. Louis Sunday for further talks about his future. There was a report, too, Mark McGwire might join him as a coach.

La Russa said discussions were ongoing.

The Cardinals scheduled a news conference for this morning but did not specify why.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on its Web site the news conference would announce La Russa had agreed to a 15th season. The newspaper also said the manager was negotiating with McGwire to be the team's batting coach.

The Post-Dispatch said the Cardinals notified current hitting coach, Hal McRae, last week they would not renew his contract after five seasons.

La Russa managed McGwire on both the Athletics and Cardinals.

McGwire has largely been out of the public eye since then. He attended Congressional hearings on steroid abuse but said little in testimony, saying "I'm not here to talk about the past," and has fallen far short in balloting for the Hall of Fame despite hitting 583 homers.

Indians hire Acta to manage club

CLEVELAND (AP) -- The Cleveland Indians have hired Manny Acta as their manager.

Acta signed a three-year contract with a club option for 2013, team spokesman Bart Swain said Sunday. Additional terms were not disclosed.

Acta was fired by the Washington Nationals in July. The Indians will introduce him at a news conference today.

The Indians chose him after a second round of interviews over former New York Mets' manager Bobby Valentine and Indians Triple-A manager Torey Lovullo. The team also had been expected to interview Dodgers' hitting coach Don Mattingly.

Acta, 40, went 158-252 in 21/2 seasons with the Nationals, who fired him after a 21-61 start this season. The Indians dismissed Acta's poor record and appreciated the way he developed some of the franchise's young players.

Speedskater Davis talks team pursuit

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Shani Davis finished up a brilliant week at the U.S. speedskating trials with a surprisingly easy win in the 10,000 meters Sunday. Then he delivered even bigger news -- he's willing to consider being part of team pursuit at the Olympics.

Davis didn't skate pursuit at the 2006 Turin Games, feeling it would hurt his individual races, and feuded over his decision with fellow American Chad Hedrick. After blowing away the field -- Hedrick included -- by more than 10 seconds in the 10,000, Davis accepted his nomination as one of five skaters who could take part in the pursuit.

That doesn't mean he'll do it for sure in Vancouver, but it's a tantalizing first step. The Americans would likely give the favored Dutch a major challenge if they can send out a team with Davis, Hedrick and rising star Trevor Mariscano.

Davis made the U.S. World Cup team in all five individual events, ranging from 500 to 10,000, and the team pursuit gives him a sixth possible race.
