Outdoor briefs for 2/1: Weis Ecology Center to host multiple events
 

RINGWOOD -- The Weis Ecology Center, 150 Snake Den Road, is hosting the following events. Registration is required for most events.

To register by mail, send your name, address, phone number, the number of participants and payment to: NJAS' Weis Ecology Center, 150 Snake Den Road, Ringwood, NJ 07456. For more information, or to register with a credit card, contact the Weis Ecology Center office at (973) 835-2160 between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Wednesdays through Sundays. * Bird Seed Sale and fund-raiser for the New Jersey Audubon Society, Feb. 7, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Order forms can be picked up at Weis Ecology Center or call (973) 835-2160 to obtain one by mail.

* Basic bird feeding, Feb. 7, 1:30-3 p.m. Program Director Mike Krug can help you make the best choices in feeders, seed type, and placement. The cost is $8 per person, with a $3 discount for New Jersey Audubon Society members. The cost of this workshop can be applied to a bird feeder or accessory purchase made in Weis' NJAS Nature Store the day of the workshop.

* Feb. 22, 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Eight Mile Schooley's Mountain, Weis Wyanokie Wanderers hike. Highlights include views, waterfalls, Lake George, an old rock quarry and a 470-foot floating bridge. The terrain is steep and the pace is fast. Participants must wear appropriate footwear and dress in layers for the weather conditions. Bring lunch and plenty of fluids. Directions will be sent to registered participants. The cost is $8 per person, with a $3 discount for members of the New Jersey Audubon Society.

* Maple Sugaring Festival/Weis Open House, Feb. 22, noon to 4 p.m. One-hour sugaring tours leave the visitor center every 20 minutes. No pre-registration is necessary; purchase tour tickets the day of the festival first-come first-serve. Cost: $6 per person, $18 per family (parent/child). Free admission for individuals who join/renew their NJAS individual membership or Families who join/renew their family membership Feb. 22.

State Park offers owls, children's hike

ANDOVER TOWNSHIP -- Kittatinny Valley State Park is sponsoring the following programs. Programs sponsored by the park are free of charge and meet at the park visitor center, located one mile north of state Route 206 off Goodale Road in Andover Township. Registration is required for all programs by 3:30 p.m. of the day prior to the program.

In case of inclement weather, participants are urged to call the park office to determine whether programs have been canceled or rescheduled. All programs may be subject to change.

* "Owls: Silent hunters of the night" from 5-6 p.m. Wednesday and Feb. 18. Everything you ever wanted to know about owls will be presented during this indoor program, followed by a short outdoor "owl-prowl."

* A l'il tykes hike from 4-5 p.m. Thursday and Feb. 19. For adults with children ages 5 and under. Share the afternoon with your little one in the great outdoors observing nature on this naturalist-guided, one-mile hike. All babies must be carried in a front-pack or back-pack. No strollers or older siblings.

'Nature Getaway' for Presidents Day

LEHMAN TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- The Pike County Environmental Education Center is having a "Presidents Day Family Nature Getaway," from Feb. 13-16. Families can come enjoy the winter outdoors and a weekend of fun-filled activities.

The cost is $160 for members and $175 for non-members, and includes lodging and meals.
